・NATO Innovation Fundは、スペインのKreios Spaceへの出資を発表した
・Kreios Spaceは、Air-Breathing Electric Propulsion（ABEP）を用いてVery Low Earth Orbit（VLEO）で衛星を運用する技術を開発している
・同社によると、VLEOでの運用により、従来より高解像度の観測やdirect-to-device communicationsの実現を狙う
・今回の資金調達額は800万ユーロで、NATO Innovation FundとJOIN Capitalが主導し、Grow Venture Partners、Xesgalicia、Tasivia Globalも参加した
・調達資金は、2機の試験衛星の開発と、ABEP engineの軌道上実証に充てられる
・NATO Innovation Fundは、この技術が欧州のsurveillance capabilities、communications infrastructure、strategic autonomy強化に資すると位置づけている

「大気を吸って飛ぶ」衛星という発想は、超低軌道という未開拓領域を実用化する鍵になり得ます。観測性能と通信効率を両立できれば、欧州の宇宙インフラ自立にも直結するため、NATOが早期に関与した意義は大きいです。
